Last updated Mar 8, 2012 — 19961 viewsThis screenshot tour accompanies our detailed, in-depth review of the second- and third-generation Apple TV streaming media players. The tour, based on the recent version 5.0 firmware release for both devices, encompasses about 150 screenshots showcasing the third-generation Apple TV menu system, settings, and resources for streaming movies, TV shows, podcasts, photos, music, and internet radio to an attached TV.
As discussed in our in-depth third-generation Apple TV review, Apple released a version 5.0 Apple TV firmware update for second-generation Apple TVs along with its slightly upgraded Apple TV third-generation hardware this month. Consequently, both generations of Apple TV share a common user interface.
Hopefully, the migration from the second-generation Apple TV v4.x firmware’s tree-style menu to the v5.0 firmware’s icon-array layout is just the first step in opening-up Apple TV to third-party channel apps that will be available through Apple’s app market. (It certainly seems likely.)
